Unlocking the bootloader of a Nexus device

The Nexus devices have always been characterized by having a clean version of Android, no customizations, having updates direct from Google and because its bootloader is very easy to unlock with the tools that Google officially provides for this. Then we will see what are the steps to unlock the bootloader of the Nexus 4 , Nexus 7 , Nexus 10 and any Nexus device.

Prerequisites and steps

To unlock the bootloader of your device Nexus need to have in our computer tools ADB and Fastboot available in the SDK for Android , have enabled development options debugging USB in our Nexus, make a backup and you use Windows install the drivers of Google . When you install theAndroid SDK we have to locate your folder and run the SDK Manager to install the Android SDKPlatform-tools and Google USB Driver for Windows.

Once installed and connected our Nexus to the computer with its cable USB we can check if the installation was performed correctly by opening a terminal window or command from your computer and inside the folder platform-tools from the Android SDK and run the following command:

  • adb devices

If the serial number of your device to us on the list is that everything works properly. Now we just need to access the bootloader to unlock it, but first we have to make a backup of your data , such as documents, pictures, videos and files that are saved in the phone memory as deleted in the process.

Unlocking the bootloader of the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Co.

To enter the bootloader we can do it in two ways. The first is to turn off the device by pressing a combination of buttons simultaneously:

  • Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10: Volume down + Volume Up + Power
  • Nexus S: Volume Up + Power
  • Nexus One: Trackball + Power

The second way to access the bootloader with the device is turned on and connected to the computer run from the computer following command:

  • adb reboot-bootloader

Within the bootloader just have to execute the following line of code from the terminal Computer forunlock :

  • fastboot oem unlock

After running the command will have to confirm on the screen of our device whether or not we want to unlock the bootloader. If we accept are all data erased device for privacy reasons. Other useful commands are:
