Sony releases companion app for the SmartBand 2 before officially announcing the wearable

Sony hasn’t quite gotten around to officially announcing a successor to the first SmartBand, the company’s fitness-focused wearable, but apparently they have one coming down the pipe. That is, as long as a newly-discovered app within the Play Store is any indicator of the future.

As noticed by Android Police, Sony has released the official companion app to the SmartBand 2 before the company could get around to officially announcing the new wearable. While Sony isn’t divulging any real details in the form of an announcement just yet, the app’s description provides plenty to expect whenever it does get debuted.

That includes a heart rate monitor on the underside of the wearable, which Sony says will track your pulse at a regular interval throughout the day. There is also a new “smart wake up” feature, which should hopefully make waking up in the morning just a bit easier for a few people out there.

Sony says the app is optimized for Xperia-branded smartphones, but it’s not an exclusive app for Sony’s lineup. The app is still available to download in the Play Store, but without the wearable to connect to there’s not much of a reason to download it just yet.

Sony will probably get around to announcing the new wearable soon enough.
