Samsung recently announced its newest line of UFS 1.0 memory cards. They are the size of traditional microSD cards but are ridiculously faster, utilizing the same storage technology that is used in the Galaxy S7 internal memory.
Unfortunately, there is no launch date for these UFS cards, nor is there a single device that can actually use it. Yes, the pinout is significantly different compared to microSD cards, so microSD slots won’t read UFS cards. Fortunately, Samsung is working on it.
The new UFS cards are not compatible with the current microSD card socket. However, we have developed a socket design that can support both UFS cards and microSD cards. We are working with different partners in the industry on this integration for next-generation devices.
Samsung is making sockets that will read both microSD and the new UFS cards, which is expected but it’s nice to have it confirmed. Our source also says that the upcoming Galaxy Note 7Â will feature UFS card support, so it’s likely this hybrid slot will show up in the device.
The Note 7 will be the ideal situation for Samsung. The company will have ridiculously fast industry leading removable memory and a flagship that will have support for it. Installing apps, recording 4K video, and more will be faster and easier with such external memory, enhanced by the rumored inclusion of adoptive storage.
We’re excited to see the future of removable storage, especially with how fast it’s getting. Now if only we could see some pricing.
