Developer previews aren’t new by any stretch. Both Apple and Google have had previews for their software for quite some time, and it looks like Amazon wants to get in on the fun, too.
On Friday, June 19, Amazon officially announced its own Developer Preview for Fire OS 5, which is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Just last month, Fire OS received its upgrade to 4.6.1, which is still based on Android 4.4, so this upgrade to Android 5.0 will more than likely be a welcomed arrival for many Fire-branded device owners out in the wild.
For developers that want to give the preview a chance, you’ll need to own a Fire HD 6 or Fire HD 7 tablet. For developers that might not have one of those devices, Amazon is offering a $50 discount on up to two Fire HD 7 tablets, which brings the price down to $49 each. That specific offer is available only until August 31.
Unfortunately, just what type of new features Amazon will be bringing to the software, or even what it will look like, is unknown at this point. At least we know it’s based on Android 5.0, though.
